Burnt
Hill Nature Walk: Burnt Hill Nature Walk trail is a relaxing
foray into the fringes of Cockpit Country. Burnt Hill was once a road
built by the Canadians in the mid-1900’s that, due to the small
amount of traffic that uses the road, is slowly finding its way back to
nature. Ideal for all ages, Burnt Hill Nature Walk allows you to explore
Cockpit Country at a leisurely pace. While viewing the unique geological
formations of Cockpit Country visitors can keep an eye out for endangered
Jamaican Yellow and Black-billed Parrots flying overhead as professionally
trained guides relate traditional herbal remedies and folklore and point
out many of the area’s endemic species of ferns, epiphytes and butterflies.
After the hike the tour wraps up at Stewart’s Farm in Rock Spring
where local chefs prepare an authentic “bush-style” meal served
in Calabash dishes. |

Rocky
Fort Cockpit Trek:Nestled underneath the towering limestone
cliffs of the Jamaican Alps is the starting point for the Rocky Fort Cockpit
Trek, a medium impact hike deep into the hills of Cockpit Country. Along
the hike tour guides steeped in the old-time Jamaican tradition of “bush”
remedies will point out the numerous plants and herbs traditionally believed
to have medicinal values. Much of the hiking trail is along some of the
first roads cut into Cockpit Country and the intricate stonework used
to make the roads and bridges can still be seen. Visitors will also have
the opportunity to view centuries-old plantation houses, wells and tombs
of some of the earliest Cockpit explorers. With a stop at Endeavor Tomb
in one of Cockpit Country’s expansive bottomlands visitors are treated
to the traditional “roast-style” of Jamaican cuisine with
plantain, coco, yam and sweet potato roasted over an open fire. The tour
finishes at the Alps community square where local crafts and souvenir
items will be available to guests. |

Cockpit
Country Underground Adventure: Situated on the fringes
of the Queen of Spain Valley and adjoining the Martha Brae watershed lies
the quiet rural farming community of Bunker’s Hill. A 40 minute
drive from Montego Bay, the Cockpit Country Underground Adventure will
take you through Cockpit Country’s unique natural features and geology
while providing a glimpse into traditional farming practices that have
developed in tandem with the area’s natural features. The trail
to the cave meanders along the banks of the Roaring River offering the
aura of tranquility as you warm up for the climb to the mouth of the cave.
The hike is a medium impact tour which involves a climb up a 45 degree
slope to the cave entrance. Once inside the cave huge chamber rooms glow
in beams of light as its spectacular stalactites sparkle like diamonds.
A large bat population has made one of the cave's chamber rooms home.
Along the hike professionally trained tour guides explain how the community
and its name is related to the American Revolutionary War and discuss
the local culture and folklore of the area. After the tour visitors will
experience local Jamaican cuisine at the Bunker’s Hill Bar &
Grill while taking in the community’s culture over a cold Red Stripe. |
Quashie
River Sink Cave Exploration: One of the most beautiful
and majestic of Cockpit Country’s nearly 300 caves, where Cockpit
Country’s waters have over eons carved out massive glistening walls,
is Quashie River Sink Cave. The excitement of this exploration begins
immediately with an exhilarating 150 foot climb where ropes and small
hand-rails are required just to reach the cave entrance. The entrance
of the cave is guarded by 20 foot waterfalls and crystal-clear swimming
pools as the ominous black mouth of Quashie Cave beckons only the bravest
to enter its depths. Once inside visitors are treated to walls and ceilings
glistening with minerals, spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, boulders
as big as cars and roaring waterfalls. Deeper into the cave crabs and
other small creatures that live in complete darkness scurry through the
waters and past visitor’s feet. At the farthest point of the tour
guides turn off all lights and allow those that have entered Quashie Cave
to experience a darkness so deep and unfathomable it has guests begging
to turn the lights back on. This tour is physically challenging and recommended
for experienced outdoor adventurers. Professionally trained tour guides
ensure the safety of visitors to this highly challenging tour. After the
tour visitors will experience local Jamaican cuisine at Virgo’s
Restaurant in Albert Town then wrap up the tour over a cold Red Stripe
at Atarus Pub. |
